A Guide to Shapes & Sizes of Glass Joints

Better Understanding of Glass Joints

A World of Glass

The world of glass is amazing, but it has components within the glass world that can be very confusing and misinterpreted. This guide is to help shed some light and knowledge on the topic of glass joints and their accessories. – What is the difference between a male and female joint? – Can I use my old bowl on my new bong? Is 14.5mm compatible with 14mm joints?

a_guide_to_shapes_image00

All joints come in two standard shapes: Male and Female.

Bowl on right features a male joint (narrow opening).

Bowl on this left features a female joint (wide opening).

Joints and Genders

Since all joints have a gender, everything with a joint has a gender. Your rig, bong or water-pipe has a gender. Bowls and pull-outs will have a gender. Bangers and nails will have a gender. Basically, any and all accessories that attach to your bong or rig will have a gender.

Female Joints

Have wide openings and are designed for attachments to be inserted inside.

Male Joints

Have narrow openings and are designed for attachments to be inserted over top.

The Standard Sizes

3 Standard Joint Sizes

10mm

14mm (Actual size is 14.5mm, 14mm and 14.5mm are interchangeable)

19mm (Actual size is 18.8mm, 19mm and 18.8mm are interchangeable)

Matching the Size

“Sizes Must Match” If you’re joint is 14mm, you will require a 14mm attachment. If you’re joint is 10mm, it needs to be matched with a 10mm attachment, and so on.

The Art of the Roll

Elements Rolling Machine

Rolling a joint is an art. Some of us rock this skill, some of us scrape by, while others are completely useless. If you’re just scraping by, or can’t roll for the life of you, it’s okay. There is a solution to this problem, and it’s actually quite simple. The answer is the Elements Rolling Machine. Low cost, simple to use, and strong enough to handle the needs of a regular smoker. It’s a particular favourite of ours, not only because it’s made from strong acrylic with equally strong vinyl aprons, but Elements ensure that their rollers are also made in an environmentally friendly manner.

Items Required

We break the process down into 4 Simple Steps, but before we begin,
you will need the following:

Elements Rolling Machine
Rolling Papers
Filter (thick paper cone)
Ground up herb, or tobacco

Step 1 – Pack the Roller

To pack the rolling machine, you will need to insert the filter, and then the cannabis.

The Filter

Twist the filter and place it in the roller on the left hand side. It’s very important to make sure the end of the filter is pointing towards you, as seen in the pictures below. If it’s facing the wrong way, it will unravel later on and you will have to restart from the beginning.

The Cannabis

Hold the filter in place with one hand, while using the other hand to fill in beside it with herb. Make sure to pack it down as you are filling the rolling machine.

Step 2 – Close & Twist

Close the Elements Rolling Machine by moving the front column towards the back, locking the herb and filter inside.

Close and Twist

Do this by rotating the front column (column closest to you) in a clockwise motion, or downwards motion towards you, as shown in the photos below.

Content Amount

Add a even amount and do not over fill machine.

Roll to Firm

Roll downwards using your thumbs to firm the contents in the roller. It will determine how tight your roll will be, the direction is shown in the photo.

Step 3 – Add Rolling Paper

This is trickiest part of the whole process.

* "So pay close attention because ideally, you’ll want the paper to catch in the rolling machine evenly from end to end."

Hold the Paper

The rolling paper with the gum at the top, facing you (as shown in the picture above)

Place the Bottom

The bottom of the paper in the slot between the two columns of the closed rolling machine.

With your Hand

With one hand, hold the paper as evenly as possible across the machine. With the other hand, twist the rolling machine until the paper catches.

Once the Paper

Once the paper is secured in the machine, you can use both hands to roll until only the gum is left visible (see picture below).

Step 4 – Lick, Stick & Done

Moisten the adhesive strip evenly from end to end. Then, rotate the Elements Rolling Machine a few more times, open it, and there you have it a perfectly rolled joint.

Product Review

For the purpose of this post, we used the Elements Rolling Machine 110mm (King Size). It's also available in 79mm for those who prefer a smaller size.

Try it out and start smoking perfect joints, every time.
