The Official Description
BEAUTIFUL SOLID BUDS WITH LARGE RESIN-COATED CALYXES THAT SMELLS OF FRUITY GAS.
SONORA (Stargazer) is an indica-dominant flower grown by Broken Coast Cannabis. The cultivar exhibits flowers with large swollen calxes and very few leaves. A stunning deep purple bud absolutely covered in large trichomes. Offering significant caryophyllene, myrcene and limonene terpene content, it releases wafts of fruity gas and dank earthy aromas.

First Impressions
The packaging is the perfect size for 3.5g, with no space to spare. It fits perfect in your hand and is almost ‘cute’ because of the diminutive size. The container does state that it’s recyclable, but unfortunately Winnipeg does not recycle black coloured plastics. So that’s a bummer, but no fault of Broken Coast.
The first waft that comes through when you first open the container is a deep dank smell mixed with something gone sour. It sounds really bad, but was strangely pleasant. It was different, but good different. The buds themselves were also a good ‘different’. Instead of super dense and compact like most weed that’s been packaged for awhile (this batch was packaged in November of 2020 – today is November 20, 2021), Sonora came out with full buds that looked almost fluffy. Actually, maybe furry is the better word, which made sense as the buds were still a bit sticky.
Sonora was easy to grind, and came out with the perfect rolling consistency.

The Experience
We smoked a joint for this review, using Pure Hemp Unbleached rolling papers. The effects build slowly, and they creep up on you. At one point, I found myself sitting upright on a chair watching a YouTube video, but without actually watching it. More like staring at it, not realizing how uncomfortable I am sitting on the edge of my seat. I suppose that’s where the nickname “Stargazer” comes from. This stuff makes you stare at things without a single thought running through your mind. B
By the time I was half way done the joint, I felt “high”, but in a calm way with an intense focus. Whether that focus was on the YouTube video, or organizing my laptop files, it didn’t matter. Whatever I was thinking about in that moment, was the ONLY thing I was thinking about. It felt nice to be relaxed in mind and body as well without a million thoughts all going at once.
The Broken Coast websites states that Sonora is 70% Indica and 30% Sativa. I would guess that’s pretty accurate as the mind and body high was exactly what I was expecting from an Indica, but the clarity of focus definitely reminded me of an energetic Sativa. The best part was that I didn’t feel the need to nap when the ‘high’ started to settle after about an hour and a half.
The joint itself burned perfect. No runs, no harshness, and as long as I remembered to keep smoking the joint, it didn’t need to be re-lit. But of course, I did forget what I was doing multiple times during this review, so the lighter was used more than once. The flavour tasted exactly as it smelled, dank and earthy with a touch of something fruity gone bad and turned sour.

Final Thoughts
Sonora, a.k.a. Stargazer, seems like the perfect strain for someone looking for a little ‘me’ time. Sonora definitely helps you be in the moment with it’s blissful yet calming effects, affording the mind a chance to clear.
Broken Coast has long been considered one of Canada’s best LP’s, and unfortunately it’s reflected in their prices. Currently, Sonora goes for $12.86/gram, or $45 for an eighth. It’s by no means the most expensive flower on the menu, but it’s certainly up at the top. Luckily, Character Co. always has premium brands of flower on sale so until December 31st, Broken Coast is being sold at a bargain.
Overall, I give Sonora by Broken Coast a 7 out of 10. Mostly because of pricing and package dates, but nothing bad to say about the flower itself. I have to admit the age didn’t seem to affect the quality at all, probably because of the nitrogen sealed package keeps their product fresh for well over a year. But still…there’s room for improvement.
Would I buy it again? Definitely, but for specific purposes. This is the strain I would most likely take backpacking and when I found a good lookout spot, Sonora would make the perfect companion for the view.
