The Official Description

There’s no split around it

Nana Punch is a sweet, dessert-like hybrid that tastes as good as it smells. A blend between the two well-known strains Banana OG and Purple Punch, the smooth, mellow, and balanced terpene profile delights the senses with its tropical pineapple flavour, bursts of ripe banana, and notes of spicy berry. Nana Punch comes in nugs that are frosty and covered in a heavy layer of purple and orange trichomes.

– Peers Cannabis

Leafly Description

Banana Punch is an evenly balanced hybrid cannabis strain made by crossing Banana OG with Purple Punch. This strain produces sedating effects that can be felt from head-to-toe. Banana Punch tastes like hazey berries with notes of freshly cut pineapple and of course, bananas. Consumers say this strain is a “creeper strain”, which means the high will come on slower than you might expect, so take it easy with this one until you know how it effects your body. Growers say Banana Punch flowers into nugs that are cakey and covered in a heavy layer of purple and orange trichomes. Medical marijuana patients choose this strain to help relieve symptoms associated with anxiety, appetite loss and stress.

First Impressions

We’ve been hearing a lot about Nana Punch lately and couldn’t wait to give this bad boy a try. With all the shout outs we saw on Reddit, our expectations were ‘high’. You wouldn’t think there’s anything special about it by the packaging though. Peers does not waste money and effort on their containers, it’s just the standard white plastic jar that would almost look medicinal if it weren’t for the playful green label. The jar included an air-tight seal and Boveda pack, and was the perfect size for an 1/8. Our senses of smell and sight were delighted upon opening the jar. When your weed smells great and looks pretty, it can only mean amazing things.

Aroma

Contrary to what the name would suggest, we did not smell any bananas. Ripe or otherwise. What we did smell was the subtle hint of berries mixed with vanilla that reminded us of something sweet and sugary, but then the smell of earth and skunk take over. The weird combination created an anticipation of things to come.

Appearance

Beautiful. That’s literally the first word that comes to mind when you see these buds. The photos included were taken with an iPhone, and they do not do it justice. The batch we brought home for testing contained 6 average sized nuggets to make an eighth, all beautifully trimmed with no stems or shake. You can’t help but noticed the sparkling white trichomes and orange pistils that literally cover the entire bud. The buds themselves were dense, but not hard. They had the perfect amount of bounce back for well-cured cannabis. Peers did a great job at harvesting this plant and it shows before you even take the bud out of the container.

The Experience

As per usual, a joint was rolled for this review, but this time we used the classic Zig-Zag single wide papers. Normally we use Pure Hemp Unbleached Rolling Papers to keep things consistent, but we ran out and didn’t want to wait another day before giving Nana Punch a try. Call us impatient, but like we mentioned, we were really excited for this one.

Flavour

The flavour wasn’t great, but it wasn’t bad either. Just like we couldn’t smell banana earlier, we also couldn’t taste it. In fact, we didn’t taste anything but a super earthy flavour, almost like dirt. That sounds bad, and if we were describing a food dish we’d recommend not to eat it, but it’s different when you’re talking about good cannabis. That being said, a flavoured paper wouldn’t hurt. It might taste different using a vaporizer, since those tend to bring out some of the more subtle or nuanced flavours of cannabis, but that method of consumption just isn’t our jam.

Effects

The Nana Punch is a knockout. Pun intended. The effects of this strain more than made up for the flavour, if you’re looking for a sedative kind of high anyway.

The effects didn’t begin right away, which fooled us into thinking it was just an average hybrid strain so we continued smoking. That was our first mistake, as the Nana Punch is definitely a creeper. It tricked us into thinking it was more sativa-dominant with a happy and energetic buzz, but then ‘BAM’! Total annihilation. It wasn’t until the concept of time and memory disappeared that we realized how destroyed we were. As regular smokers, feeling that kind of buzz is a rare occurrence and we couldn’t be happier with the potency of this strain. It says it’s only 24% THC, but it’s easily comparable to other strains in the 27% – 30% range.

The only downsize is that the high is very one-sided. If we were guessing what kind of strain this was based of the effects alone, we’d definitely say heavy indica. It doesn’t make you feel sleepy so much as it does comatose and lazy. If you can manage to stay moving while at the peak of your high, the comatose feeling does fade into a much more balanced buzz of body tingles and creative energy. However, if you’re still on the couch after an hour, it’s probably nap time.

Final Thoughts

Nana Punch is a winner in all areas except flavour. The buds looked amazing, the effects were overwhelmingly powerful, and the joint burned perfectly. If we had to list one critique, it would be the smell/taste. It definitely reminded us of a dark and dank basement that was recently flooded and no one noticed. However, that’s a pretty minor critique since we all know, the more powerful the smell, the more terpenes are present. In that area, it comes down to personal preference.

Would we try it again? Definitely. Nana Punch is the strain we’d save for special occasions, or after a particularly stressful day. It’s what we would bust out if we were trying to impress even the most hardcore cannabis connoisseur.

It’s currently priced at $40 an 1/8, which is the same price point as most 7Acres and Citizen Stash products. Does it deserve to be in that group? Yes. Absolutely. In fact, if it was priced even higher I don’t think anyone would blink. It’s definitely craft cannabis but available at a mid-range price point.

The Official Description

A High THC Hybrid

Glueberry OG, fueled by some of today’s best genetics, is a three-way cross of GG #4, OG Kush, and Blueberry. Grown indoors, this high THC hybrid features olive green flowers frosted with sugary amber trichomes and has a distinctive kush aroma with sweet and spicy taste notes.

– Muskoka Grown

Leafly Description

Glueberry is an evenly-balanced hybrid marijuana strain made by crossing Blueberry with Gorilla Glue and OG Kush. This triple threat of a strain can pack a heavy punch of effects that will make you feel euphoric before lulling you into a chilled out state. Glueberry has a fruity, blueberry flavour profile with bright hints of citrus. Medical mariuana patients choose this strain to help fight symptoms related to PTSD and chronic anxiety.

First Impressions

Let’s start with the packaging. Nitrogen sealed containers should be the future of legal cannabis, especially with the various shelf life of some products. If nitrogen packaging is the ideal standard for food grade items, it should be the ideal standard for cannabis as well. Both are perishable products that degrade with time, but nitrogen slows that process significantly.

Not to mention you get an extremely satisfying experience when you open this little tin can and are immediately overwhelmed with the smell of ‘dank’ weed. My container of Glueberry OG did not disappoint. The smell and the visuals all looked promising even though the packaged dated is January 21, 2021, and I’m doing this review a year later on January 24th, 2022.

Aroma

Right away you’re hit with a strong smell of diesel and earthy hops followed by subtle hints of pepper or maybe spice. It was hard to discern, but still extremely appetizing. I didn’t get any of the citrus or berry notes as described in the Leafly reviews.

Appearance

This batch included multiple small buds. Not one stood out as extra-large, but I didn’t mind as they fit in my grinder better. There were a few pieces of shake, but it looks like they just fell off the buds as they got shook in the container. One of the downsides to big containers for small amounts. Though the buds were small, they were not dense. They also didn’t just crumble to powder when touched, there was enough moisture left in the buds to squish them without them breaking.

As for colour, it was actually difficult to see anything other than green covered in crystals. The trichomes were absolutely plastered on these buds and sparkled so pretty. Upon closer look, you can definitely see the orange hairs mixed with those lovely trichomes, but the buds were mostly pale green and even coloured throughout.

All in all, the weed looked really good.

The Experience

Now the fun part. As always, a joint was rolled for this review using Pure Hemp Unbleached Rolling Papers. Actually, a few joints were used for this review because I forgot to take notes the first time and just enjoyed the buzz.

(Also, for those who’ve commented, I don’t use a rolling machine, but I do put the filter in last.)

The cannabis shred perfectly in the grinder, not too sticky and not too dry. It made rolling a breeze. Although this strain is a hybrid, it hit like an indica. Perhaps the ‘couchlock’ effect I was feeling was a result of the GG #4 genetics. I did not get much of a cerebral high with Glueberry OG. If you’re hoping for a clear-headed or functioning high, this isn’t the strain for you. If you want something dreamy, calming, and relaxing without feeling sleepy, then this is your jewel. Smoking this made me want to curl up with a good book, or get lost on Tik Tok for way longer than anyone should. I actually really appreciated the equal parts head high and body high, it was total relaxation in the best way.

Flavour

Smooth, but pungent. That strong smell of diesel really comes through in the flavour, so much that it overpowers any hop taste. The subtle pepper smell also becomes much more pronounced. No hint of blueberry though, at least none that I noticed.

Effects

This strain will make you forget about everything around you except the one thing you’re focused on. Even that could be a challenge as the dreamy effects really take over. My body was calm and relaxed, but I did not feel sleepy, just happy and lazy.

Final Thoughts

I really liked this strain. A lot. The burn was great, the taste was great, and the high was even better. Glueberry OG seems like the perfect strain to smoke after a long hard day at work. I could feel all the stress and tension leave my body as I smoked the joint, but left me with enough energy to still accomplish things if needed. I’ll be honest though, accomplishing things was a bit difficult when your mind is dreamy, as it’s easy to get lost in thoughts and quickly forget about what it was you were doing. That’s how we burnt the fries, but we won’t talk about that. I mean, at least I still had the energy to cook, that’s something right?

For a strain that hits on all cylinders, it’s priced really well. Here’s a product with great packaging, great buds, great experience, and it’s selling for $32 an 1/8, or roughly $9.15 a gram. If you’re shopping at Character Co., it’s currently on sale for $28.00 a 1/8 while supplies last.

Hash

The Wonderful World of Hash

The World of Hash

Hash, or hashish, is the original cannabis concentrate. The OG if you will.

With a history spanning thousands of years, its humble beginnings have evolved to include modern methods of cannabis extractions.

Hashish

Hash, or hashish (which means “grass” in Arabic), is what you get when cannabis trichomes are separated from cannabis flowers.

Traditional hash is the original cannabis concentrate and is most recognizable as a brown brick or ball with a malleable, gummy texture, followed by strong spice and earth notes when pulled apart. Today, hash takes on many colours, textures, and consistencies. The term ‘hash’ has become an umbrella term over the last few decades to include traditional hashish methods as well as the more modern methods using solvent extraction.

Technically, all concentrates are hash, as all concentrates begin with the process of separating trichomes from the flower. However, for the purpose of this post, when we refer to hash we’re speaking of the traditional (solvent-free) hash products.

Hash

Cannabis Trichomes

Trichomes, from the Greek word “trichoma” meaning “hair”, are the fine growths that glisten atop cannabis buds. It is within these trichomes that cannabinoids and terpenes are found, which is what make them so important in the production of hash.

Harvesting cannabis plants at various stages of development will produce varying cannabinoids and terpenes. For example, a cannabis plant harvested during peak flowering stage when trichomes look clear or translucent will have high concentrations of THC. If harvested several weeks later when the trichomes have begun to turn cloudy or amber, the same plant will have less THC and more CBN, producing an entirely different effect on the consumer.

Hash

History of Hashish

Winnipeg Cannabis Dispensary

Hashish has been around for more than a thousand years, but its true origin remains a mystery. Records show widespread use of hashish in Arabia as early as 900 AD, and the first written reference appears in the classic “1001 Arabian Nights” stories which is estimated to have been written around 1000 AD.

Thanks to Hollywood, many people today are familiar with the legend of the word “assassin” tracing back to the word “hashish” because Persian solders would consume the drug before going into battle. It’s not certain whether the legend is actually true, but regardless, by 1300 AD, Marco Polo had heard the same story of hashish-using assassins and took these tales back to Europe.

The consumption of hashish continued to spread around the world throughout the years. By the 18th century, hashish had become so popular in Europe that it was being consumed by both soldiers (Napoleonic campaigns in Egypt) and literary figures such as Charles Baudelair and Victor Hugo.

How Hash is Made

Over the centuries, different regions of the world developed their own hash-making techniques, resulting in textures that range from fluffy and powdery to solid and compact. Those differences in technique also affect colour, where it can be gold, pale olive green, red, or almost black.

There are two main steps to the hash-making process: separating trichomes and then pressing trichomes, better known as sieve and press.

Dry-Sieve

Hash

Dry-sieve or sifting is the process of separating the trichomes from the cannabis plant by rubbing the flower over a screen. This process will produce a powder like substance known as “kief”.

The quality of kief depends on both the size of the screen and the time/intensity that flower is ‘shaken’ over it. The finer the holes in the screen, the better quality the kief as less plant matter is mixed in. The less time that flower is shaken over screens also improves kief quality, as only the ripest and most developed cannabis trichomes sift through the screens first. Once again, the less time shaking flower over a screen means less plant matter to dilute the quality of the kief.

Hand-Rubbed

Hash

Hand-rubbed hash is probably the second most common technique for making hash, and has been the form of production for hundreds of years in countries such as India, Nepal, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Hand-rubbed hash is the result of physically touching fresh female cannabis flowers through extensive handling in order to retain the sticky trichomes. Hands are then rubbed together to press the trichomes into a workable resin. The resin is then rolled into balls and are cured, sometimes for years, until completely free of moisture.

Ice Water

Hash

Using ice-water, fresh or dried cannabis is submerged and stirred, either by hand or machine, to break off the hardened, frozen trichomes. The resin-rich solution is poured through mesh-screen bags to separate the trichome heads from the plant matter.

The wet sand-like material that remains is dried and cured for weeks to ensure that all traces of water have evaporated. Depending on the grade, the colour can change. As a general rule, the lighter the colour of the bubble hash, the better it is! The better it has been filtered, the less plant material that ends up inside the final product. What remains is a pretty decent solventless hash product.

Butane Hash Oil

Butane Hash Oil

Butane hash oil, or butane honey oil, is a modern method of hash production and the base for many cannabis concentrates such as rosin, shatter, wax, crumble, badder, and so on.

BHO is made with a very clean, high purity version of butane gas. During the BHO extraction process, the Butane gas passes through the cannabis in a sealed cylinder separating cannabinoids and terpenes from the raw material of the marijuana plant. BHO concentrates have an extremely high THC and terpene content in comparison to their traditional hash counterparts.

Types of Hash

Many cannabis consumers enjoy hash for its rich fragrance, delicious flavour and powerful potency. These are elements that will differ between types of hash to provide a unique experience.

Below are examples of the more popular types of traditional hash.

Hash

Kief

Kief is the simplest and most basic form of hash. It is collected by sieving fresh or dried/cured flower over a screen to separate and isolate the trichomes.

Kief has the texture of powder and the look of sand. Those who use a compartment-style grinder to roll their own joints will have already encountered kief. It is the resin/powder that collects in the bottom compartment and in the screens.

High-quality kief will have less plant matter mixed in. This process entails using multiple screens with finer holes as the sieving process progresses.

Afghan Hash

Afghani Hash

Afghan hash is made using dry-sieve kief, known in Afghanistan as Garda. The dry sift is then hand pressed using a small quantity of tea or water and worked until it becomes highly elastic. While the dry sift is being handled, it is periodically placed over a flame or other heat sources and then worked again.

What began as a golden kief product eventually turns into an almost black solid mass of resin. The resin is then rolled into either bricks or balls and left to cure until completely devoid of moisture.

Hash

Charas & Nepalese Temple Balls

Finger hash, also known as Charas in India, is the original hashish concentrate. Alluring and aromatic, charas was born from the first contact between people and the hemp plant, as sticky resin is unavoidable when handling cannabis.

Instead of sieving cannabis to collect the trichomes, resin is collected by lightly handling the female flowers of the cannabis plant until enough sticky resin builds on the palm and fingers. Hands are then rubbed together to collect the resin into a solid form.

Nepalese Temple Balls take the process one step further. Traditionally, ceramic plates are used to create the resin balls, then left to age (sometimes for years) which forms a crusty outer layer and a soft, creamy interior.

Bubble hash

Bubble Hash

Bubble Hash is one of the most popular and commonly found types of hash in the world today due to its smooth flavour,  high yield, and unaltered terpene profile, which gives way to the entourage effect.

Bubble Hash is solvent-free, made using ice water or dry ice extraction methods. Once the trichomes (kief) have dried, it is compacted and made ready for consumption. Top quality bubble hash is also called full melt bubble hash. Full melt refers to cannabis hash that is highly concentrated and devoid of plant matter so that it readily melts and bubbles when heated rather than burn.

Hash

Moroccan Hash

Moroccan hash is almost legendary among die-hard fans of hashish. It is one of the only products that contains  high concentrations of the terpinoid Hashishene, which gives Moroccan hash its unique flavour and aroma.

The methods of making this Moroccan legend differs completely from most other methods. First, Moroccan weed is dried for months, traditionally on rooftops with the help of the sun. This weed was never meant for smoking, so it is dried well past consumable standards. Once sufficiently dried, a bowl is covered with panty hose, the dried cannabis is placed on top, and then the cannabis is covered again by another piece of cloth or plastic. The bowl is then placed between the feet to make it easier to beat with sticks. This beating separates the trichomes through the panty hose leaving a beautiful powdered kief in the bowl.

The kief is then placed in an iron casing box to form solid bricks of what is known as ‘Polen’, or blonde hash. When there is heat treatment applied to the forming of bricks, the hash is then called ‘Paki’.

Lebanese Red Hash

Lebanese red hash is one of the most sought-after varieties with its deep red colouring and exotic aroma.

Like Afghan and Moroccan hash, Lebanese red is also made using the dry-sieve technique and then pressed using heat and iron casing. The key differences in the Lebanese process come from the area where cannabis is grown, and the cultivation of the cannabis itself. The Beqaa Valley in Lebanon is a fertile area with rich red soil, surrounded by mountains, with long hot summers ideal for growing cannabis. Here, cannabis is harvested at the latest stage of maturation, when the leaves have begun to turn yellow and fall. At this time, the trichomes have also begun to turn a deep amber rather than cloudy or frosty white. After harvest, the plants are left in the field for up to a week to dry before storing.

It is the combination of red soil, late harvest, and sun-drying that gives Lebanese Red Hash its name and colour. It’s also important to note that the aging trichomes produce more CBN and less THC, giving Lebanese Red a more relaxing and sedative effect rather than psychoactive.

How to Consume

Hash is versatile, as are the methods of consuming it. Does anyone remember ‘hot knives’? Kidding, don’t do hot knives, it ruins your utensils and the chances of burning your lips are high. Get it? Okay that’s the last pun we promise.

If you’re going to smoke the hashish, it can be smoked in a joint, pipe, bubbler, or bong. Due to its density, it should be mixed with dried cannabis flower, tobacco, or another smokable herb.

It can also be used to make very potent edibles, so be careful with how much is used.

Finally, it can also be vaped or dabbed, but if you’re smoking the traditional versions then dabbing or vaping should be avoided. Most traditional hash still contains some plant matter, which burns and does not vaporize. Though it will still work, you’re likely to waste most of your good product in addition to leaving behind a sticky, black, resinous mess. Dabbing and vaping are best left to modern-day concentrates such as rosin, resin, shatter, etc.

Are You Intrigued?

We don’t blame you. Hash is an amazing, versatile concentrate with a ton of history. Those traditional flavours and aromas combined with techniques rarely seen today make it an alluring experience.

Try for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.

The Official Description

THOUGHTFULLY-SELECTED

Jean Guy is 7ACRES’ tribute to the Quebec-born legendary strain made famous by the Montreal Compassion Club. Jean Guy is a balanced hybrid with a pungent citrusy and woody aroma. Jean Guy has earned a reputation as a top-shelf strain among Canadian cannabis enthusiasts. Jean Guy is a Canadian connoisseur strain with a unique history, and aroma of citrus and wood.

– 7ACRES

Leafly Description

Jean Guy is said to be a phenotype of White Widow, and is a hybrid from Canada with intensely cerebral effects and a sour citrus smell. Hints of lemon and pine come through in Jean Guy’s flavour, providing a gentle launch into jolting sativa effects. Its energizing and uplifting qualities makes Jean Guy a perfect strain to start the day with, although scattered and distracting thoughts may interfere with productivity.

First Impressions

I have been super excited to try this strain. Reading the reviews on Reddit and Leafly made this one a must-try. Expect your basic black plastic container, with it being a little too large for 3.5 g of flower. Not ideal as the constant movement during shipping will create more shake than when it was initially packaged. The package date for this batch of Jean Guy was March 9, 2021, and it’s being reviewed January 7th, 2022.

The first thing you can’t help but notice when you open the seal is the fantastic smell. The terps are definitely working overtime on this one as the citrus smell comes shining through. It’s almost like someone put lemon zest in the container. There’s also a subtle wood or earth aroma, but it’s hard to pinpoint as the citrus overpowers everything.

The buds themselves were small popcorn sized nugs except for the one big one. The moisture content was just OK. A humidity pouch was not included, which made me wonder if that’s not a missed opportunity by 7ACRES. The flower wasn’t so dry that it turned to powder, but it was dry enough that you couldn’t squeeze a nug without it breaking apart either. Only the big nug had a small stem, but otherwise everything in the container could be smoked (no seeds, no leaves, not extra stems). I found the colour to be underwhelming, with not much to it. Apparently that’s pretty standard for this cultivar. Jean Guy is usually pale green with pale orange pistils and a lot of trichomes that makes the already light colour seem even more pale. Almost gold, or like it had been decarboxylated.

If the smell impressed, the look did not, but luckily we all know it’s the smell that matters most.

The Experience

As usual, I smoked a joint for this review, using Pure Hemp Unbleached rolling papers.

The buds shredded nicely in the grinder, creating a perfect consistency for rolling. Once shredded, the orange pistils were much more apparent. The flavour was pleasant, very similar to its aroma. Unlike the aroma however, the flavour of pine was much easier to pick up. It also left a bit of an earthy aftertaste. I found the smoke to be smooth even though its a nine month old product.

Considering the lower THC levels, Jean Guy hit surprisingly hard. The high came on very aggressive and was definitely cerebral. For myself, the energizing and uplifting effects only lasted while smoking the joint. Once the joint was finished, the cerebral high took over with a lot of random thoughts about nothing in particular. My head felt heavy and my thoughts unfocused. I was definitely very high, but in an unproductive way. Similar to the way I usually feel after smoking a strong indica. I searched Jean Guy on Google to see if others had a similar experience, and it was noted on Wikileaf that this strain can induce scatter brained thoughts and musings if consumed beyond moderation. I guess that explains what happens to me, as I did finish the whole joint and definitely experienced the intense effects that interfered with any sort of productivity. All I wanted to do was take a nap if I’m being honest.

The only way to be sure about this strain was to smoke another joint at a later time. After work, I decided to try and put together some IKEA furniture. For this test, I rolled a smaller Jean Guy joint and got to work. The high hit just as aggressively as the first test, but this time I was more focused on the task at hand. The concept of time disappeared, and I happily followed instructions and got it done. I felt so focused and energized that I ended up moving on to another task even though it was approaching 10pm and I had already worked a 9 hour shift. I suppose the trick for this strain is to already be moving around, because the high is strong no matter what time of day. If you’re stationary, it’ll feel like an additional sedative, but if you’re moving, it’s the motivation to keep you going.

The flower itself burned perfect both times. No runs in the joint at all. Burned smooth and did not require a re-light.

Final Thoughts

I really liked this strain. It tasted so good, and burned so well that it was actually a pleasure to smoke regardless of the effects.

But of course the effects are important. I enjoyed both the couch-locked experience from the first test and the energizing effects from the second, I just wish I had known beforehand and saved the little joint for the daytime and the big joint for the night time. Regardless of it’s conflicting results, I really like that it’s versatile. Just a little pinner for a pick-me up during the day, or a larger joint for the night-time treat.

7ACRES is in my opinion a very dependable brand. Their version of Jean Guy is consistent and tasty, even if a little on the pricy side. At an average of $40 an eighth, it’s not the most expensive but it’s far from the cheapest. You’re paying for the dependability, though they could go the extra mile and include moisture packs of some sort in those large containers. Would I buy Jean Guy again? Yes, if I saw it on sale. It could very well be my go-to strain if just a little bit more affordable. Luckily, Jean Guy is currently on sale at Character Co. for $34 an eighth while supplies last.

Interesting in trying it out for yourself while it’s on sale? Find it here.

The Official Description

BEAUTIFUL SOLID BUDS WITH LARGE RESIN-COATED CALYXES THAT SMELLS OF FRUITY GAS.

SONORA (Stargazer) is an indica-dominant flower grown by Broken Coast Cannabis. The cultivar exhibits flowers with large swollen calxes and very few leaves. A stunning deep purple bud absolutely covered in large trichomes. Offering significant caryophyllene, myrcene and limonene terpene content, it releases wafts of fruity gas and dank earthy aromas.

– Broken Coast

First Impressions

The packaging is the perfect size for 3.5g, with no space to spare. It fits perfect in your hand and is almost ‘cute’ because of the diminutive size. The container does state that it’s recyclable, but unfortunately Winnipeg does not recycle black coloured plastics. So that’s a bummer, but no fault of Broken Coast.

The first waft that comes through when you first open the container is a deep dank smell mixed with something gone sour. It sounds really bad, but was strangely pleasant. It was different, but good different. The buds themselves were also a good ‘different’. Instead of super dense and compact like most weed that’s been packaged for awhile (this batch was packaged in November of 2020 – today is November 20, 2021), Sonora came out with full buds that looked almost fluffy. Actually, maybe furry is the better word, which made sense as the buds were still a bit sticky.

Sonora was easy to grind, and came out with the perfect rolling consistency.

The Experience

We smoked a joint for this review, using Pure Hemp Unbleached rolling papers. The effects build slowly, and they creep up on you. At one point, I found myself sitting upright on a chair watching a YouTube video, but without actually watching it. More like staring at it, not realizing how uncomfortable I am sitting on the edge of my seat. I suppose that’s where the nickname “Stargazer” comes from. This stuff makes you stare at things without a single thought running through your mind. B

By the time I was half way done the joint, I felt “high”, but in a calm way with an intense focus. Whether that focus was on the YouTube video, or organizing my laptop files, it didn’t matter. Whatever I was thinking about in that moment, was the ONLY thing I was thinking about. It felt nice to be relaxed in mind and body as well without a million thoughts all going at once.

The Broken Coast websites states that Sonora is 70% Indica and 30% Sativa. I would guess that’s pretty accurate as the mind and body high was exactly what I was expecting from an Indica, but the clarity of focus definitely reminded me of an energetic Sativa. The best part was that I didn’t feel the need to nap when the ‘high’ started to settle after about an hour and a half.

The joint itself burned perfect. No runs, no harshness, and as long as I remembered to keep smoking the joint, it didn’t need to be re-lit. But of course, I did forget what I was doing multiple times during this review, so the lighter was used more than once. The flavour tasted exactly as it smelled, dank and earthy with a touch of something fruity gone bad and turned sour.

Final Thoughts

Sonora, a.k.a. Stargazer, seems like the perfect strain for someone looking for a little ‘me’ time. Sonora definitely helps you be in the moment with it’s blissful yet calming effects, affording the mind a chance to clear.

Broken Coast has long been considered one of Canada’s best LP’s, and unfortunately it’s reflected in their prices. Currently, Sonora goes for $12.86/gram, or $45 for an eighth. It’s by no means the most expensive flower on the menu, but it’s certainly up at the top. Luckily, Character Co. always has premium brands of flower on sale so until December 31st, Broken Coast is being sold at a bargain.

Overall, I give Sonora by Broken Coast a 7 out of 10. Mostly because of pricing and package dates, but nothing bad to say about the flower itself. I have to admit the age didn’t seem to affect the quality at all, probably because of the nitrogen sealed package keeps their product fresh for well over a year. But still…there’s room for improvement.

Would I buy it again? Definitely, but for specific purposes. This is the strain I would most likely take backpacking and when I found a good lookout spot, Sonora would make the perfect companion for the view.
